Science: Investigating Science at Work
Discover the science behind The Deep. This presentation covers the scientific work undertaken at The Deep and in particular the water filtration system. We look at the roles and qualifications of our science staff, ICT in the organisation, health and safety requirements, commercial constraints and the impact of The Deep on the local community. A 56 page document is available (on disc) to accompany this presentation at a cost of £10.
SCIENCE: HIGHER LEVEL GCSE/AS/A LEVEL/UNDERGRADUATE OBSERVING ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR - NEW FOR 2011!
Using the downloadable worksheet from The Deep's website, this innovative and stimulating workshop will explore different methods of behaviour sampling. Students will set up and use a hydrophone to observe the communication behaviours of the animals that live in the Lagoon of Light. This challenging workshop requires students to study duration, frequency, accuracy and the reliability of data.
Geography & Citizenship: Threats to the Marine Environment
Our marine environment has evolved over millions of years into a finely balanced ecosystem. Now it is threatened by the dominance of one terrestrial species - humans! In this presentation you can find out just how we affect the natural balance of the oceans and what we can do as individuals to contribute to marine conservation.
ART AND DESIGN: DRAWING FROM NATURE - NEW FOR 2011!
The Learning Centre is home to a vaired collection of items related to marine life. We can put these out on display for your students to observe and draw and can, if you wish, give a brief talk on their origins to start the 40 minute session. The collection includes coral skeletons and replicas, crab and lobster casts, large tropical shells, also shark teeth, jawbones and egg cases. Please note that the bulk of the collection has been donated by past collectors and all other items have been ethically sourced in-line with our principles as a conservation charity.
SCIENCE: UNBELIEVABLE SLIME! - NEW FOR 2011!
Discuss the different uses of slime which help animals to survive, both on land and underwater. Investigate the reaction involved in making slime, followed by a fun practical to make and test your own.Finally, try to relate the properties of slime to the structure of slime.
MATHS: FANTASTIC DISPLAYS - NEW FOR 2011!
Be an aquarist for a day and create amazing display tanks with the right animals using a fixed budget. Decide on size, temperature and which animals to put in them, then make sure your tanks aren't too crowded! This workshop will tax your calculation and data handling skills, working with real information from The Deep.
Marketing
This presentation looks at The Deep as a business, examining its sucessful marketing. Covering market research, market segmentation, promotional methods, the marketing mix and highlighting the Slime! marketing campaign.
Customer Care
Using The Deep as an example, we examine types of customers and their needs, good and bad customer service and how we communicate with customers. Our complaint handling procedure is discussed as is the importance of effective staff recruitment and selection procedures.
