A large organisation known as All for One Choir, based in East Yorkshire and now Lincolnshire, sent out a call to arms, on an accessible music project that has included many local celebrities and organisations and more than 300 of its own choir members. The list is including the Deep, Hull FC and Hull KR, Joe Longthorne, Sam Gray, Burnsy, Sally Fairfax, KC Communications, Steve McNamara (England Rugby Coach) and all being well: Luke Campbell and many more will follow. The recording features the HUGE mass choir of All For One, solo vocals from the wonderful Sally Fairfax (BBC News reader )and local professional gospel choir Hot Gospel (who have supported Peter Andre and also recorded their own a re-arrangement of Hull FC’s anthem, Old Faithful, which has been a HUGE success).

The Deep would like to apologise for incorrect information published in a press release on 11/4/2013. The press release related to corals and clams that had been transferred to the care of The Deep, having been seized at Heathrow Airport as they did not have the appropriate CITES documents. The Deep had been informed by a third party that the corals and clams had originated from the Cook Islands. We have since been informed that the corals and clams did not originate from the Cook Islands and we are happy to correct this fact. THE DEEP ORGANISES LOCAL BEACH CLEAN

The Deep guides are seeking volunteers to help them with their annual beach clean at Hessle Foreshore on Sunday 18th September, starting at 11am. The event is part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) UK-wide Beachwatch 2011. Beachwatch is a nationwide annual beach clean-up and litter survey organised by MCS. It takes place on beaches all over the UK. Each piece of litter collected will be identified, weighed and recorded before being carefully disposed of by The Deep. The data collected goes towards the Marine Conservation Society’s national survey, which is subsequently used to help raise public awareness of the impact of litter on the environment. It will also add weight to a campaign for legislation to reduce litter on beaches. Beach litter is fast becoming a big problem to our beaches not only looking unsightly but also posing a threat to marine life.

The app, which is available on the iPhone and Android operating systems, features the animals of the award-winning aquarium, and has been developed by local IT solutions company, Marquest. Deep places Net Gain on international stage

Representatives from Net Gain, part of a nationwide project to establish a network of marine protected areas around the English coast, will be travelling to the 2nd International Marine Conservation Congress (14th-18th May) in Victoria, Canada next week thanks to sponsorship from The Deep. Project Manager, Joanna Redhead, will be presenting at the conference, placing the work that has been carried out through Net Gain in the international spotlight. Since 2009, Net Gain has been working with sea users up and down the English North Sea coastline to develop recommendations on where MCZs can best be located. The project was set up to contribute to the UK government’s vision for establishing a network of Marine Protected Areas that is well understood and supported by 2012.

The Deep guides are seeking volunteers to help them with their annual beach clean at Hessle Foreshore on Sunday 19th September, starting at 11am. The event at Hessle Foreshore is part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) UK-wide Beachwatch 2010 event.

Quiet Day at The Deep October 8th

Due to popular demand, The Deep is holding its next Quiet Day on Friday October 8th. This event coincides with National Learn to Sign Week. Throughout the day, audio will be turned down to make the attraction more accessible to those with hearing impairments who normally find some of the sounds distracting. Some of the presentations will be signed in British Sign Language (BSL).

New Zebra Sharks at The Deep

The stunning Zebra sharks, Stegostoma fasciatum, are so called because–they are born stripey, gradually turning spotty, hence their alternative name. Baby Froglets

The Deep aquarium in Hull is rearing baby Blue Poison Dart frogs, Dendrobates azureus. The baby frogs or froglets as they are known, are tiny replicas of their parents. They have hatched from spawn laid in one of the displays at the aquarium. Blue Poison Dart Frogs are so deadly that indigenous people in the rainforest where the frogs can be found, used to wipe their arrow and darts on the frogs skin before going hunting, hence the name dart frog. The baby froglets are thriving and now measure just under 2cm long, nose to tail.

Ballan Wrasse

The Deep is working with a Scottish marine laboratory to find out if there is an alternative to the chemicals used to treat sea lice on farmed salmon and cod which threaten their health. Ballan Wrasse hatched and reared from eggs donated by The Deep will co-habit with farmed fish. The juvenile wrasse feed on the lice and will hopefully provide an excellent method of ethical and sustainable pest control.
