Student Work Placements and Assignments

The Deep receives many enquires from students regarding work experience. Students may spend one week in one of the following:

  • The Deep attraction OR
  • The Deep Business Centre OR
  • The Deep – with the aquarists only (over 18 years only)

The Deep Attraction

For students in year 10 and over

Students aged 18 or under wishing to come to The Deep may chose a week in The Deep covering the following departments:

  • Office areas (Finance, Marketing and Personnel)
  • Education (working with schools and college groups)
  • Shop
  • Guiding (working in the attraction)
  • Catering

Connexions

A Connexions risk assessment is carried out on behalf of schools has ruled out a list of 'no go' activities within The Deep for all students aged 18 or under including working with the aquarists 'wet side'.

Animal Science Students

For students over 18, who have left school/college and are studying or planning to study marine biology, veterinary science, animal management and similar. These students may be eligible to spend a week within our aquarist department. Please email andrew.mcleod@thedeep.co.uk for more information.

Student information

A generic student pack is available, covering many aspects of the running and management of The Deep including a small amount of financial information. There is a marketing strategy included in the pack, plus information about the animals and their husbandry. Unfortunately no further information is available outside the pack contents. If you would like a copy emailing to you please send your email address and request to susan.hornby@thedeep.co.uk.

AS Science in the workplace

The Deep produces an education pack for upper secondary school teachers and pupils who are teaching/studying AS and A Level Science. The unit studied is called 'Investigating science at work'. The pack is produced on CD at £10 per disc. A taught classroom session on this unit is available at The Deep including a visit to the exhibition and a behind-the-scenes tour of the plant room where the water treatment process is discussed.
