International Sawfish Day

The Deep, in partnership with the Sawfish Conservation Society (SCS), the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) and Associations of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) was extremely proud to have launched the very first International Sawfish Day on 17 October 2017.

International Sawfish Day is an annual event to raise awareness of these vulnerable animals and to highlight the threats they face in order to safeguard their future. Now in its second year, we hope to further grow awareness of this special day and of these magnificent marine animals, some species of which are on the brink of extinction.

#IntlSawfishDay was launched via a Thunderclap across social media. This crowd-speaking platform enabled us to put out a message that could be shared by many at the same time. Having generated support from around the world, the top supporting countries included the UK, United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. Our conservation message was successfully delivered to nearly 500,000 people and our supporters included the DiCaprio Foundation and Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden.

There are five species of sawfish in the world – Dwarf sawfish, Knifetooth sawfish, Smalltooth sawfish, Largetooth sawfish and Green sawfish. Classified as critically endangered or endangered  by the IUCN, sawfish are considered to be the most threatened shark species in the world because of destructive fishing practises, habitat destruction and the curio trade. The Deep is home to the only Green sawfish in the UK.

International Sawfish Day 2018

We have some exciting things planned for the day, including the installation of a very special mascot. If you are visiting us on International Sawfish Day you can enjoy some special activities - our guides will be doing regular sawfish talks throughout the day, as well as badge making and colouring in Craft Corner. Our team in Castaways Cafe are currently cooking up some tasty sawfish themed treats including delicious home made biscuits.

We will have fundraising activities throughout the day and monies raised will go towards sawfish conservation projects, if you would like to get involved start by downloading these resources to help you.
