Student Work Placements and Assignments
PLEASE NOTE - All of our work experience placements for 2017/18 academic year are now full.
18 or under and still at school or college?
This one week work placement during term time only is suitable for students in years 10, 11, 12 and 13 and studying at school or college. During the placement students will spend time in the gift shop, reception, cafe, education department, guiding within the exhibition and the offices. There will be the opportunity to be shown behind-the-scenes of our husbandry department. Hours of work are 9.30-4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10.15am to 4pm on the Monday. Students should wear black shoes and trousers and The Deep will provide a uniform top.
An annual risk assessment is carried out on behalf of schools by E2W Education to Work Partnership and they have ruled out a list of 'no go' activities within The Deep for all students aged 18 or under including working with the aquarists 'wet side’. We regret that individual risk assessments by individual schools and colleges is not allowed.
Are you 18 or over studying a Degree in Education, a PGCE or considering a career in Teaching?
The Deep’s education department is staffed by 2 primary school teachers, a high school science teacher and a marine biologist offering a ‘Learning outside the classroom’ experience to visiting schools. This 1-4 week placement (the exact length depends on circumstances of individual students) takes place during term time, 5 days a week from 9-3pm. Students will have mentoring support from one of The Deep’s teachers, enabling students to fully fulfill their course criteria. The Deep welcomes up to 12 school classes each day, with student ages ranges from 4 to post graduate level.
Are you 18 or over and studying marine biology, zoology, veterinary science, animal management or similar as a BTEC, undergraduate or post graduate course at college or university?
We offer one week placements all year round with the aquarists. The Deep receives many enquiries from students regarding work experience in this area and most placements are booked a long time in advance. Each November our Assistant Curator considers all requests and will make contact with students who have expressed an interest, allocating all places for the following year. All places for 2018 have now been allocated. Students wishing to secure a place for 2019 should contact us, and we’ll add your request to the list, with a decision being made in early November 2018.
