The Deep is saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Terry Farrell.
Terry was an award-winning architect, widely renowned for the world-class buildings he designed around the globe. Amongst these was The Deep, today recognised as an iconic symbol of Hull.
His proposal “stood out head and shoulders” above the rest, The Deep’s former chairman, the late Honorary Alderman David Gemmell OBE said. Terry’s bold design of The Deep saw the building pushed right out into the Humber for maximum effect; in a flat city, the idea was to create a new landscape on Hull’s skyline that juxtaposed its surroundings. In Sir Terry’s words, “the dramatic ascent of the building as it rises out of the ground is a symbol of regeneration and optimism that recalls the pioneering spirit of Hull”.
The Deep’s former Chief Executive and current Chair of Trustees, Colin Brown, reflects on fond memories of Sir Terry; “he was a gentleman, he really listened to us and seemed to have a genuine affection for Hull. He often spoke of The Deep as one of his favourite projects and of his desire to create a new icon for the city.....I think he succeeded. Visitors to The Deep might recall the words on Sir Christopher Wren’s tomb in St Paul ‘Reader if you seek his monument look around you’"
We give thanks to his incredible vision to bring the concept of The Deep to life.
