A collaborative project, bringing together research institutions, zoos and public aquaria to work on developing a better understanding of keeping reef building corals.
A number of key factors in Coral cultivation and husbandry were investigated and included, but were not limited to; fragmentation, transportation, nutrition and sexual reproduction. The research aimed to optimise the sustainable aquaculture of stony corals in aquaria.
The project ran between 2005-2009 and as a result of the work undertaken the consortium produced a comprehensive manual of protocols in coral husbandry techniques and a number of scientific papers.
The Deep was a key partner in the initiative, which was funded through the European Commission. Other partners include the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, Rotterdam Zoo, Burgers Zoo, Wageningen University, Costa Edutainment S.P.A., Astridplaza N.V., Red Sea Corals LTD., Israel Oceanography and Limnology Research LTD.
