The Deep has achieved great successes culturing and displaying several species of jellyfish and has achieved a number of UK firsts.
To date The Deep has successfully displayed and cultured a number of different species, often providing them to other BIAZA aquariums to enhance their exhibits.
We are the first UK aquarium to have successfully cultured the Black Sea Nettle, White Spotted jellyfish and Fried Egg jellyfish
Jellyfish have a complex life cycle and each stage requires special care. Culturing jellyfish is a very delicate and time consuming process. These incredibly delicate animals are very sensitive to environmental changes and require very specific food at different stages in their life cycle. They start life as a small disc called an ephyrae which is released from a tiny anemone like structure known as a polyp. All of our jellyfish are reared in special tanks called Kriesels, these provide the correct water movement for both swimming and feeding behaviours.
As well as culturing the jellyfish we also have to culture their food. Jellyfish feed on microscopic animals called zooplankton. We culture our own zooplankton on a daily basis to allow us to give the jellies the best food available.
