Since 2002, The Deep has organised regular beach cleans at Hessle Foreshore as part of the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) Beachwatch national beach cleaning programme.
Beachwatch is a nationwide annual beach clean-up and litter survey organised by MCS which takes place on beaches all over the UK. Each piece of litter collected is identified, weighed and recorded before being carefully disposed of. The data collected goes towards the Marine Conservation Society’s national survey, which is subsequently used to help raise public awareness of the impact of litter on the environment. It will also add weight to a campaign for legislation to reduce litter on beaches. Beach litter is fast becoming a big problem to our beaches not only looking unsightly but also posing a threat to marine life.
Over the years we have managed to collect an astonishing 991kg of rubbish! We want to say a huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers, we couldn't have done it without you. Beachwatch is a fantastic opportunity for the public to get involved in a worthwhile cause and to help make a difference, whilst having fun. Aimed at children aged between 3 and 15, this event has become very popular with families from all over the region.
