What's on at the Deep

There are always lots of exciting events here at The Deep alongside daily talks, presentations and dive shows. Simply choose your month below to see what's on.

Daily highlights

Join us and enjoy an extensive programme of daily activities.

Dive show

This takes place at at 2pm each day at Endless Oceans (Monday to Friday), the Lagoon of Light (Saturday) and the Amazon Flooded Forest (Sunday). Watch the video of our divers feeding the sharks here. Please note: the dive shows taking place on Tuesday and Thursday in the Endless Oceans tank are cleaning only. The animals are fed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Touchpool sessions

Handle some of our smaller species native to the UK at Dylans Discovery Corner including starfish, velvet swimmer crabs and sea urchins. These sessions take place at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm. Make sure you also try your hand at fossil brushing in this area as well as testing your skills on the interactive magic floor. 

Penguin feeding

See our keepers hand feed the loveable Gentoo penguins in the Kingdom of Ice at 11.30am and 3.30pm every day. This is accompanied by a talk on the lower level of the enclosure, just through the ice tunnel, by one of our Guides who will explain more about the penguin's feeding and behaviour, as well as threats faced to penguins in the wild. 

Easter Egg-Stravaganza - CANCELLED

Join us this Easter and discover new life in the oceans, learn about the different types of eggs laid by some of our residents including sharks, turtles and penguins.

Don’t miss our fun family presentations at 11am, 1pm and 3pm daily in Endless Oceans where you can learn how parents make decisions when laying and caring for their eggs, experience egg development and care through interactive activities and find out more about our involvement in breeding programmes around the world.

Pick up a trail sheet at the entrance, look for the clues around The Deep then draw the correct animal inside the right egg. Post your completed trail in the box at the entrance turnstile to be in with the chance of winning an egg-cellent prize.

Stop by Craft Corner between 11am and 4pm for family craft activities, choose from turtle, shark and penguin.

Plus see over 5,000 animals including sharks, rays, turtles, penguins, jellyfish and more!

Junior Experience Day - CANCELLED

Is your child aged between 8-11 with a passion for marine animals? Then join us for a fun-filled experience day where your youngster can help carry out some of The Deep’s daily activities.

Join a group a like-minded kids (two groups of up to 8) for a junior experience day where The Deep crew will lead you through a number of activities including:

  • Touring the Cool Seas plant room and Turtle display preparation area
  • Cleaning the exhibit acrylic
  • A touchpool session
  • Trying on a dive kit and watching the dive show
  • Taking part in a slime workshop
  • Handling the cockroaches

Places are £39.50 each and can be booked by clicking here.

Shark Egg Case Hunt - CANCELLED

Join us for our first Egg Case Hunt of the year! Taking place at Spurn Point, this free event is being delivered in partnership with the Shark Trust and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in a bid to involve local people in shark conservation.

NOW FULLY BOOKED

Ideal for children aged 3 upwards, you can support marine life whilst enjoying a great day out. All participants are asked to wear suitable and sturdy footwear, wellies are ideal! The event is expected to finish by 3pm. All under 16's must be accompanied by an adult.

Little Nippers (term time only) - CANCELLED

Don’t get crabby, come to little nippers on Tuesday mornings 9:30-11am for our fun-filled discovery and play sessions.

Suitable for children aged 2 and under. Enjoy a sing-a-long and story time in The Deep’s soft play area. Pay admission to The Deep once, and receive a Day Plus Pass which entitles you to visit as often as you like for free. Booking is not required. Simply turn up on the day. 

Adults pay standard admission for 12 months entry, plus £1 per session for your little nipper!

Beach Clean - CANCELLED

The Deep is on the lookout for volunteers for our first beach clean of 2020 at Hessle Foreshore. It is free to attend.

This event is part of the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Beachwatch, a nationwide annual beach clean-up and litter survey organised which takes place on beaches all over the UK. Each piece of litter collected is identified, weighed and recorded before being carefully disposed of. The data collected goes towards the Marine Conservation Society’s national survey, which is subsequently used to help raise public awareness of the impact of litter on the environment. 

Suitable for children aged 3 upwards, this is a great way of helping your local environment. Under 16's must be accompanied by an adult at all times.  Please make sure to wear comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear on the day. Gloves and hand sanitiser will be provided on the day.

Tranquil Tuesday (term time only) - CANCELLED

Join us on the first Tuesday of each month (TERM TIME ONLY) for Tranquil Tuesdays. From 3pm until closing the lights will be brighter and the audio turned down, creating a tranquil environment for our visitors.

This event is perfect for those who prefer to visit during a quieter and more peaceful environment. Everyone is welcome to attend. Normal admission rates apply and there is no need to book. 

We have a range of aids available to hire free of charge for visitors with access needs including ear defenders, Braille guides, large print guides, MP3 audio guides, international language leaflets, rollators, electric mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Our access guide and social story can be viewed here.

  • The Deep is open daily from 10am to 6pm (last entry is at 5pm).
  • Car parking is available at a cost of £3 for six hours. It can become full during school holidays – alternative car parks can be found here.
