Marine Art: Ernst Haeckel

Dates:
September 1, 2017 - October 22, 2017

The Deep’s 3rd floor gallery will play home to a thought provoking series of artworks from six artists in 2017, all with a marine theme.

Haeckel was a German Biologist, Naturalist and Artist who discovered and named thousands of new species. In 1899 he began to publish a series of extraordinary images that changed the way we viewed the relationship between Art and Science.

100 of his images were put together to create 10 volumes of Art Forms of Nature. Many of the organisms included within these collections were first described and classified by Haeckel himself. This stunning combination remains, to this day, an astounding record of life on earth.

International Sawfish Day

Dates:
October 17, 2017

Join The Deep, alongside aquariums all over the world as we celebrate the very first International Sawfish Day on 17 October; a day dedicated to increasing awareness of these amazing animals in a bid to safeguard their future.

This annual event has been created in partnership with the Sawfish Conservation Society (SCS), the European and American Associations of Zoos and Aquariums to educate people on the threats they face as well as developing conservation strategies that will protect them.

There are only five species of sawfish in the world – Dwarf sawfish, Knifetooth sawfish, Smalltooth sawfish, Largetooth sawfish and Green sawfish. They are considered the most threatened elasmobranchs (i.e. sharks and rays) in the world due to destructive fishing practises, habitat destruction and the curio trade. The Deep is the only aquarium in the UK to house the Critically Endangered Green sawfish (as classified by the IUCN).

So join us as we get 'toothy' from 17 October to 5 November with a range of activities including sawfish crafts, badge making, sawfish talks and more.

Also help us support International Sawfish Day with the hashtag #INTLsawfishday on social media. For those wanting to get involved we have a whole host of resources available to download here.

With eight animals to chose from (Biscuit starfish, Blue regal tang, Damselfish, Grey reef shark, Manta ray, Moon jellyfish, Pufferfish or Sea Turtle), children can design their favourite fish, which can be touched on the wall to see it interact with you. This immersive experience will draw out your inner artist and is an ideal way for families to get creative together.

Shark Egg Case Hunt - NOW FULL

Exploring other animals that also call Spurn Point home, this is sure to be a great day out for all the family. Every pre-registered child that takes part will also take home a goody bag.
