Shark Egg Case Hunt - FULLY BOOKED

Join us at Spurn Point for our first Egg Case Hunt of the year! Taking place along the East Coast, these free events are being delivered in partnership with the Shark Trust and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in a bid to involve local people in shark conservation.

Ideal for children aged 3 upwards, you can support marine life whilst enjoying a great day out. All participants are asked to wear suitable and sturdy footwear, wellies are ideal! The event is expected to finish by 3pm. All under 16's must be accompanied by an adult.

There is a cafe and toilet facilities onsite.

Pint of Science

Pint of Science is back for 2019! And we are joining the team to take science out to the masses. Hear all about fascinating discoveries and research going on in Hull.

The Deep will be delivering talks in the Vintage Bar on 20, 21 and 22 May as follows:

  • Reducing Plastic - How Can You Save the Earth? and Seagrass vs. Climate Change
  • The Wierd and the Wonderful - and the Weird Again
  • Sunburst Diving Beetle... Nature's Scuba Diver and Saving Sea Turtles

Sense-ational Sharks

May 25, 2019 - June 2, 2019

Dive in and learn more about super shark senses this May half term! It’s sure to be sense-ational!

Join us in the Endless Oceans Gallery at 11am, 1pm and 3pm for our interactive shark senses work shop and discover the amazing senses that sharks have used to survive for over 450 million years. You can even try your hand at hunting for prey just like a shark too!

Visit Craft Corner from 11am to 4pm to make you own shark hand puppet, and don’t forget to follow the sense-ational shark trail as you go round the aquarium to be in with the chance of winning a prize.

Find out more about the Shark Trust #Move4Makos campaign and show your support for ending uncontrolled shark fishing by moving 1 mile. Our guides can give you some great ideas on how to do this when you get home.

Deep Experience

The Deep 1 to 1 Experience is a morning with a difference for those with a love of the marine world.

Get hands on and help The Deep crew with a series of day to day activities as well as seeing behind the scenes. Experience days are ideal for youngsters with a passion for the marine world or those looking at getting into a Marine Biology career, but are also perfect for adults with an interest in aquaria. The Deep Experience is suitable for participants aged 8 and above. Exact details are dependent on participant age - please click here to find out more and to book.

Tranquil Tuesday (term time only)

June 4, 2019

Join us on the first Tuesday of each month (TERM TIME ONLY) for Tranquil Tuesdays. From 3pm until closing the lights will be brighter and the audio turned down, creating a tranquil environment for our visitors.

This event is perfect for those who prefer to visit during a quieter and more peaceful environment. Everyone is welcome to attend. Normal admission rates apply and there is no need to book. 

We have a range of aids available to hire free of charge for visitors with access needs including ear defenders, Braille guides, large print guides, MP3 audio guides, international language leaflets, rollators, electric mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Don’t get crabby, come to little nippers on Tuesday mornings 9:30-11am for our fun-filled discovery and play sessions.

Suitable for children aged 2 and under. Enjoy a sing-a-long and story time in The Deep’s soft play area. Pay admission to The Deep once, and receive a Day Plus Pass which entitles you to visit as often as you like for free. Booking is not required. Simply turn up on the day. 

Adults pay standard entry for 12 months entry, plus £1 per session for your little nipper!

World Ocean's Weekend

June 8, 2019 - June 9, 2019

So dive into The Deep this World Oceans Weekend (8 and 9 June) and enjoy some fun-packed activities.

Your oceans need you more than ever. Will you join us in making one small change to help them? Add your pledge to our ‘sea of change’ board and make it part of your every day life. Have fun with our Guides in their interactive presentation at 11am, 1pm and 3pm and find out how we can all protect the oceans from plastic and pollution.

And of course the stars of the show are the reason we should care about the oceans: amazing marine life! See fascinating favourites such as giant Loggerhead sea turtles and sharks, playful Gentoo penguins, remarkable jellyfish and hundreds of colourful tropical fish. Enjoy regular touchpool sessions, scatterfeeds, penguin feeds and the must-see daily dive show!

We are delighted to welcome award winning author and poet Christina Gabbitas to The Deep, to help us celebrate World Oceans Day 2019.

Visit The Deepartment Store between 11am - 3pm and meet the author who will be signing copies of her fin-tastic book ‘Save Us’, the story of Sienna Seal and Wahida Whale and how they rescued Thierry Sea Turtle from a plastic bag.

This book raises awareness of the importance of the oceans and the role they play in sustaining a healthy planet, with Sienna the seal proving to be a great ocean ambassador.

Turtle-y Awesome Summer

It’s going to be a turtle-y awesome summer here at The Deep, so make sure you don’t miss out!

Get hands on in our very own ‘turtle hospital’ where youngsters can get up close with a giant turtle (a cuddly one, of course) and find out what it takes to look after our flipper-ed friends. Learn all about turtle anatomy and even help the team carry out a turtle health check. Inspect their eyes, nose and mouth, as well as checking their flippers and shell then report back to us on your vet examination form.

Take part in the turtle trail and find out about more about the species that live all around the world and the challenges they face.

Enjoy interactive presentations from our guiding team at 11am, 1pm and 3pm and get your face painted in Craft Corner from 11am to 4pm. Plus we will be giving you the chance the put your questions to our Turtle Keepers via our Facebook page each week. So get your thinking caps on! 

Visitors to the turtle hospital will also receive exciting discounts in the shop, so it’s the perfect time to take home your own cuddly turtle to care for.

Junior Experience Day

Join a group a like-minded kids (two groups of up to 8) for a junior experience day where The Deep crew will lead you through a number of activities including:

touring the Cool Seas plant room and Turtle display preparation area
cleaning the exhibit acrylic
a touchpool session
trying on a dive kit and watching the dive show
taking part in a slime workshop
handling the cockroaches

Quiet Day

Experience The Deep in a more tranquil environment on our upcoming Quiet Day.

The audio will be turned down for those who find the sounds distracting and the lights will be brighter to make our information more clear. Audio and Braille guides are also available free of charge at reception, the timetable below includes all BSL signed presentations and shows throughout the day!

  • 10.30 – Touch Pool session at the Discovery Corner - BSL
  • 11.00 – Endless Oceans Presentation – BSL
  • 11:30 - Penguin Feed at the Kingdom of Ice - BSL
  • 12:00 -  Lagoon feed at the Lagoon of Light - BSL
  • 13:00 - Conservation film at Endless Ocean - BSL
  • 13.30 – Touch Pool session at the Discovery Corner  - BSL
  • 14.00 – Dive Show at the Main Tank at Endless Ocean  – BSL

We would suggest the following itineraries to suit your arrival time or you can mix and match to suit your preferences:

  • 10.00am arrival – Touch Pool, Endless Ocean presentation, Penguin Feed, Dive Show in the Main Tank
  • 11.45am arrival – Lagoon Feed, Penguin Film, Touch Pool, Dive Show in the Main Tank, Penguin Feed

Normal admission charges apply and there is no need to book. Please note, there will be no school visits on this day.  

Beach Clean (21st September)

The Deep is on the lookout for volunteers for our beach clean at Hessle Foreshore. This event is free to attend.

This event is part of the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Beachwatch, a nationwide annual beach clean-up and litter survey organised which takes place on beaches all over the UK. Each piece of litter collected is identified, weighed and recorded before being carefully disposed of. The data collected goes towards the Marine Conservation Society’s national survey, which is subsequently used to help raise public awareness of the impact of litter on the environment. 

Suitable for children aged 3 upwards, this is a great way of helping your local environment. Under 16's must be accompanied by an adult at all times and will receive a free goody bag for taking part. Please make sure to wear comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear on the day. Gloves and hand sanitiser will be provided on the day.

Opening Times

  • Open daily from 10am until 6pm. We are closed on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day
  • Last admission is at 5pm, although we recommended you to arrive no later than 4pm
  • The Deep’s peak times are between 11am – 2pm, should you prefer a quieter environment please visit outside these times.
  • Car parking is available costing £3 for six hours. It can become full during school holidays. Alternative car parks can be found here

Public transport information

Safety Update

The Deep takes the safety and security of its staff and visitors seriously and continue to work with Counter Terrorism Police Officers to review security regimes on a regular basis. Whilst the details of such plans cannot be shared we have in place measures to respond to changes in the threat levels for international terrorism. In light of recent events the security within the building and external spaces has been reviewed.

For the safety and reassurance of visitors, The Deep reserves the right to carry out random bag searches at reception. To avoid delays, please avoid bringing large bags and rucksacks.
