Hello my name is Luda, I am 23 years old and I have been volunteering at The Deep for two months now.

I have a physical disability called arthrogryposis which affects my arms, hands, legs and feet so I use an electric wheelchair to get around, using buttons on my foot tray that I control with my feet and I have assistance from my PAs 24/7. I have been visiting The Deep with my family from a young age and I have always loved looking at all the different exhibits and learning about all the species. The Deep has always been one of my favourite places to visit as the whole place is very accessible and it has a Changing Places toilet which is great for individuals who need to use hoisting equipment. My favourite animals have always been the penguins and turtles and it has been my dream for many years to be able to work with them one day!! I was so passionate about wanting to volunteer here because I have a performing background so I have always loved being up in front of people. I felt volunteering within the Guide department could be a great experience to help with building my confidence as well as overcoming my fear of being discriminated against. I feel that representation is not shown enough through everyday life within employment so I thought this would be an incredible way to be able to represent disability in such a calm environment where the focus is on the animals rather than seeing me in my wheelchair. When I first started, I was extremely nervous as I did not know how the public were going to react to seeing me in the attraction. I was also so scared to work with the rest of the crew as I was unsure on what experiences they have had with people with disabilities. My mind was soon put at rest as everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. I have absolutely loved the whole experience, sharing the same passions with everyone who works there as well as teaching all the families and school groups about the animals, plus I have created some lifelong friendships with the crew. Seeing everyone leave with smiles on their faces with new facts they can go and tell their friends about is the most rewarding feeling about this experience!!
